Sandy Theodorou and Friends present REBETIKA, the Greek urban music from the early to mid 20th Century. Intermingling of the urban underclass with refugees from Asia Minor, which included formally trained musicians of the Cafe Aman, simmered into a profoundly powerful music of the poor and dispossessed associated with the underworld which was, at times, censored. Witty and passionate, the songs are about the diaspora, jail, drugs, misery, poverty, death, longing, and resilience. Our musicians are Rohan Gregory (violin), Panayioti Vorvis (bouzouki, baghlama, vocals), Georgios Galanakis (guitar), Maria Laini (vocals), and Sandy Theodorou (accordion, baghlama, potirakia, vocals).
